precious things

"After all, the most precious things in life are found by searching."
I have recently read this comment on the internet and it made me smile. No matter how I think of it: it's true. And it goes for people, places, feelings, ideas, things.

Many times in our lives we are offered precious things, but we fail to acknowledge their worth because we haven't been needing and searching for them. We first realize something is precious only after we have experienced its (potential) absence. Because if it's not there, one needs to look for it or for a substitute. The mere fact of looking for something, makes one realize how indispensable it is for satisfying one's needs. A bit intrigued, I'm really looking for an exception for this rule. I guess, after all, the most precious things, are found by searching ;)

Maybe... a woman is surprised to know she is pregnant, she did not search for it (although she did what everyone does with a lover, at least after a certain age, and which she searched for), and suddenly* there it is, the most precious person in the universe for this woman. Like magic!

*not so suddenly, I hear it is quite painful

Hmm... don't know if it's a good example, but it is what ocurred to my mind as an exception.

Oh, it's a good one! I assumed that this quote is most difficult to interpret when it comes to people. Because it gets more philosophical. However, in any other person (rather than a mother-to-be) I could argument that experiencing the potentiality of other people's absence makes us realize that we would be looking for them, if they weren't there (maybe not them as individuals, but them as characters).

The case you have described might be a bit difficult to interpret and, indeed, an exception!
