sita sings the blues

"Sita Sings the Blues" is a 2008 animated feature film directed, produced and animated by American alternative cartoonist Nina Paley, in a shadow puppet style, using mainly 2D computer graphics. It retells the story of Ramayana, featuring Sita, set to Annette Hanshaw's immortal jazz pieces (watch HD trailer here). The movie was produced on a low budget on the artist's home computer over five years. It was made in an attempt of the artist to come to terms with a difficult break-up, hence using the tagline "The Greatest Break-Up Story Ever Told". The result: an experimental, inimitable, extraordinary, colorful and surprising film.

The wait is over! Nina Paley’s critically acclaimed animated feature “Sita Sings the Blues” is finally available on DVD. Paley’s retelling of the Ramayana gives the ancient Hindu epic a spunky twist with vibrant, tongue-in-cheek animation and seductive music, courtesy of jazz legend Annette Hanshaw. This dazzling new film is available on DVD through Netflix and Amazon.
